Like most newer video editors, this latest version of VideoStudio X2 offers end-to-end high-definition editing and output. This version has better format support, including improved AVCHD compatibility and support for the BDMV files created by Blu-ray camcorders. Unlike Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Platinum, which had problems importing video from our Canon Vixia HF100 AVCHD camcorder, VideoStudio brought in the 1080p clips with no issues, allowing us to select individual clips from the camera's SD card.

VideoStudio's user interface is similar to Pinnacle Studio's in that it guides you through a three-step Capture, Edit, and Share process. Beginners can simply drop clips onto a filmstrip and place transitions between them, and more experienced users can use the timeline view to manage title tracks, two video tracks, and a pair of audio overlay tracks. The interface elements are now resizable, letting you get a better view of the timeline or sample effects while you're creating your project.
The new version adds a number of overlay effects. Along with the fan favorite "old film look," there's also an innovative Painting Creator feature that lets you sketch on your video. You can point out a baby's head by scribbling arrows on an ultrasound video, for instance, or add animated lines tracing your travels to a map.
VideoStudio has output presets for a wide variety of formats and devices besides the iPod and PSP, including mobile phones, Pocket PCs, and Microsoft's Zune player. You can burn Blu-ray discs, or you can save shorter HD clips to much cheaper DVDs and play them on Blu-ray players (including the PlayStation 3) that support AVCHD DVDs. You can also upload video directly to your YouTube page, though VideoStudio supports only the fuzzy YouTube FLV format, rather than the higher-quality AVC format offered as an option by Vegas Movie Studio.
In our tests, VideoStudio utilized all four cores on our quad-core test system when encoding video, halving the rendering time of a dual-core setup. VideoStudio is also smart about not re-rendering segments that are already in suitable format for the final project, further speeding up video encoding.
In addition to its full-fledged editor, VideoStudio offers the Movie Wizard and a direct DV tape-to-DVD converter. The Movie Wizard takes your video clips and automatically creates shorts films with themes like sports, family, and travel. Though its choices aren't always optimal, you can send the automatically generated movie to the main VideoStudio editor for further tweaking.
VideoStudio Pro X2 is very easy to use, and it has all the basics to create impressive, professional videos. And although it's not as flexible as some other video-editing programs—there's not as much control over effects or how you chain them together, for example, as there is in Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Platinum—if you just want to trim and assemble video clips; add effects, titles, and a soundtrack; and render to a wide variety of formats and devices, you'll find that VideoStudio makes the job quick and easy.

About the Author
Is anybody familiar with MovieMaker and willing to answer some questions through MSN messenger?
I am competent with Mac's video program, but am stuck with a PC for the weekend... and I'm not getting anything done.
It would be much more helpful to me to be able to chat as problems come up than to use Yahoo! Answers.
If not...
- Is there a way to lock the video to the audio, so that I can delete/edit/move other pieces and the locked clip will stay aligned in the same place?
- Can I put a mark/bookmark on the filmstrip at a certain time?
- How can I have the video start after the audio? It snaps the video to the beginning...

Maria....wow this is a coincidence, just today I have been in contact with a lady from USA about movie maker.
I am a video jockey and have mastered Camtasia.
I have tried out the online editing suites of Eyespot and Jumcut but as yet have not tinkered with movie maker.
All editing software work on similar basics. They permit you to add separate visual clips to the timeline and audio clips to the audio line below. As I write I have loaded up movie maker and - yes, if you have recorded your visual (silently) the files are split into seperate mini files, so you should be able to add your audio file then stop at the end of your visual file and save, naming it as -' whatever' 1- then do similar with the other files. By saving you are in a way bookmarking.
By all means contact me on - paphelco@hotmail.com
We can go through it together - should be interesting!
