Rock Climbing Grades - what are rock climbing grades and how to climb 3 grades harder

In rock climbing the term grade is used to describe the overall difficulty and danger of the climb.  Rock climbers generally aspire to be able to climber harder grades as that is an accurate measure of their skills as a rock climber.

The factors that contribute to the difficulty of a climb and thus its grade are:

1. The technical difficulty of the moves
2. The strength required
3. The stamina or endurance required 
4. The level of commitment, and the difficulty of protecting the climber.

So improving as a rock climber and being able to climb at higher or harder grades is an indication not only of that persons skill as a rock climber but their overall physical shape and conditioning as well.

To help confuse you the different types of rocking climbing have different types of grading systems.

For Free Climbing there is:

• The Yosemite Decimal System invented by the Sierra club
• The YDS class (class 1-6)
• The YDS grade (grade 1-7)
• The YDS protection rating
• The British Grading system (used for traditional climbs)
• The Adjectival Grading system (easy,moderate, etc)
• The Technical Grade
• UIAA
• French Numeral Grades (1a,1b,1c,2a,2b, etc)
• Brazillian Grading system
• The Ewbank system

Then you have a seperate grading system for mountaineering which is another form of rock climbing

• IFAS (International French Adjectival System)
• Romanian
• New Zealand
• Alaskan

Then there is a grading system for Ice Climbing, a grading system for bouldering, a grade system for aid climbing!

WOW.  If it was up to me there would be one grading system easy, medium, hard, very hard, and 'make your will out to me'

So once you decide on the type of rock climbing you want to pursue get familiar with their grading system so you can relate to how hard a climb you have ahead of you.

How would you make this schedule for a first grade class?

I teach first grade and I have a difficult time in creating a schedule that fits everything in. What would you suggest?
We start at 7:50, students leave to go to specials at 10:45-11:30, then go to lunch at 11:50-12:20 and leave at 2:00.
Within those times I have to fit in a 2 hour reading block, science/or social studies (I usually switch each subject weekly), writing, math, and of course the best...recess.
Within the reading block I would like to have time to do centers, word work, and ind. reading time.
I know what is best for the students that are learning to read, I just have a hard time fitting everything in, in the time we have, with the capability of a 6-7 year old.
Any suggestions would be great!

If you are starting at 7:50 then you will have plenty of time to fit in the reading block in the morning. There are many combinations that could work, but I usually start off the day with Journal writing. This way the students have an activity to do while morning announcements and attendance is taking place. I would follow the journal writing (10 mins.) with my Reading block (8-10). Then you will have about 45 mins to input writing, science, social studies, or recess. Between specials and lunch you have 20 mins. so you could input an activity there. After lunch, 12:20 you could start your Math block. Just remember, the way things look on paper does not have to dictate exactly how you run your class. Of course when you are being observed by administration and the District then you follow your schedule to a T but on other days, if you finish early then move on. You will be surprise how everything that needs to get done actually does get done. Oh and don't forget, you can have your students read, or in the case of the first half of the year read to your students, their science books and social studies books during reading. But once again make sure you check to see what your district guidelines are.
