How advantageous is it to spend your first year of college in your hometown?

I'm thinking about going to a local college like IUPU or Ivy Tech for my first year to get my required classes out of the way. Plus, it'd be much cheaper.
Then the next year I could transfer to a bigger college and start on my majors.
Is this a good strategy or would it be better to just apply at a bigger, more expensive school for all my years of college?
I want to do something with animals. Like maybe a vet. I dunno if career choice would make a difference or not.

There is no general answer. It is an individual problem with an individual solution. You need to assess what is best for you, not what was best for someone else. Maybe you need to draw up a chart with positives and negatives on each side of the decision and see what you come up with. For me, a local college proved best for the four years. Why? I had to work my way through and I had all kinds of great contacts in my hometown so I was guaranteed a job. I did have to choose between a small school and a major public university and I chose the large school. I felt that was best for me because I wasn't going to school for a social life but for an education.

Good luck and do well whichever you choose. After all, it will affect only the rest of your life. You don't need college to get into heaven but you do need it to get into medical school!
