Learning Software

Does a french learning software really work?
To learn any language is hard work and to learn French with its complicated grammar and pronunciation rules may even be harder. In the past, students needed an actual teacher in order to go anywhere with learning any language. These days, it only takes a computer and some accessories in order to simulate the experience of learning with an actual teacher. Computers have affected the field of education by making gaining knowledge accessible to people at their homes.
To language learners, French has a reputation for being a difficult language to study. Despite this, it is still one of the languages that many people attempt to learn. And why not – it is among the languages that sound romantic and many lovers would want to converse in it while walking the streets of Paris. Moreover, since it is a difficult language to learn, doing so becomes an achievement in itself and people who learn French are regarded as intelligent. To top it all, French is the language of many great literary works.
As mentioned above, a number of learn French software has sprouted in recent times. Along with the fact that computers have become ubiquitous in the homes, so have innovative methods of learning and all an individual has to do to learn French is do a search, sign up for a program, pay the price and download the software or wait for it to be delivered to him. There is no need for him to take a trip to a certain place or communicate with a live individual.
Because of its relative accessibility, a learn French software opens itself up to the question of whether it can be used as the main source of education and not merely as a supplement to it. Is this kind of software really all it takes for someone to learn this language? Does a French learning software really do the work that an actual teacher used to do in the past?
There are different schools of thought as far as this is concerned. Some language experts and observers believe that having an actual teacher or attending a formal school cannot be replaced by any software. While they do not discount the help that computers bring to education, these people believe that it is only with formal schooling and the kind of immersion that comes with it that will make learning French the complete experience that it should be.
On the other end are those language experts and observers who accept that computers have indeed changed the way people educate themselves. To these people, a software that aids in learning French can stand alone and students no longer need to enroll in a formal school in order to add to their knowledge.
While the truth may be somewhere in the middle, the trend tends to sway towards the fact that using a learn French software works to help anyone learn this language. To anyone who can muster up the discipline of sitting in front of the computer for a few hours a day, this kind of software will work to get him speaking French without ever leaving his home.

Is language learning software with speech analysis really accurate? Is it worth the money?
I am learning Mandarin Chinese and I have heard about language software, such as Rosetta Stone, that can analyze your speech and let you know if you are pronouncing words correctly. Has anybody tried programs with this feature? How well does it work? If you found it helpful, which software brand would you reccomend?
Generally, I would say it's not very accurate. Those kinds of programmes can roughly assess single sounds (eg. /p/ or /e/), but personal accent, connected speech, and regional variances tend to count as 'bad pronunciation' (despite being perfectly normal and common in real speech).
But...
When learning a language with tones, like Mandarin Chinese, a programme like this can really ensure that you are using the correct tones.
So in this case, I would say definitely get it (or something else with speech analysis - I use Language Now, BYKI)
