When the Diagnosis is Autism
Once you've heard the word autism applied to your child, you may find life as you once knew it, a blur. Suddenly, the top left off the toothpaste pales in comparison. Unclean bedrooms, undone laundry and a mud tracked carpet hardly earn your disapproval. You're busy looking years into the future, sadly rewriting everything you thought you'd have... Stop! Refocus... Autism is merely another way to view the world. You can fight it every step of the way, making yourself miserable, or you can flow with it, learning all you're able to learn; becoming more aware and alive. It's up to you, though while you're thinking about it; let's talk therapy for your child. You choose the treatment based on your child's needs, the quality of services, financial resources and availability of specific therapies in your region.

Biomedical therapy
ABA is a reward based therapy that seeks to shape and control behavior. A child is encouraged to repeat positive behavior by being given a reward. Negative, or otherwise unwanted behavior is met with verbal disapproval, or withholding a desired object or activity.
Speech Therapy is of utmost importance for autistic persons whether, or not they are verbal. All persons on the autism spectrum have difficulties with understanding language. Speech therapy involves proper use of gestures as well as recognizing and understanding gestures. Pragmatics, conversation skills and concept skills are also taught.
Occupational Therapy assists persons in developing daily life skills. It may involve handwriting, dressing skills such as zipping, snapping, buttoning, tying... Play skills, social skills and sensory integration is also addressed. OT may also involve gym activities, such as swinging, obstacle courses, and other activities. It may also include brushing (desensitizing an individual). Adaptive techniques are used to aid those having motor skill difficulties. For instance, one may require a keyboard instead of hand writing skills for written communication.
Transition training is a valid therapy for autistic persons. It falls under the category of occupational therapy and deals with the act of moving from one thing, or place to another... Given transition is upsetting for nearly all persons on the autism spectrum it is not surprising to be found here. Transition disrupts an autistic persons ritualistic sense of routine and unless comfort based strategies are put into effect, an autistic person can lose control of his emotions and present crying spells, behavioral problems, or at times hostile confrontation. Transition plans are an excellent way to help an individual feel content while moving from one setting to another.
Physical Therapy aids persons to build, or rebuild strength, mobility and motor skills. It helps autistic persons in motor skill development such as hopping, tumbling, throwing and catching, skipping, mild exercising, sitting on a chair, or a large ball, standing and walking properly. A physical therapist may assist a child when at recess and at other open free-play periods.
Play Therapy helps persons to learn to communicate better with others, as well as to learn about emotions. A child, or adult learns to recognize expressions of happiness, sadness, frustration, anxiety, hopelessness, excitement, fear, etc. They may also learn ways to manage their own feelings, discomfort and behavioral issues.
Behavioral Therapy is another extremely relevant therapy because most persons on the autism spectrum present some type of quirky and or unusual behavior, or mannerism. Many autistic persons flap, or move their hands in ways society as a whole often finds offensive, disturbing and disruptive. An autistic person may spin her body, or rock in a standing or sitting position. Some will spit, lick their hands, kick, hit, slap, bang their head, mimic and lay on the floor in places and at times where this behavior is inappropriate. They may scream, cry uncontrollably and pay little attention to traffic walk signals or other warning signs, consequently bringing danger and injury to themselves, or others. They may sing or otherwise make noise in private and in public places. Behavioral therapy strives to find ways to manage these behaviors.
A Behavioral therapist does not necessarily work with your child on a regular basis, but initially observes and accesses a child in his/her regular serving and environment; then prepares a plan, or regiment for parents, teachers, caregivers, etc. to follow.
Developmental Therapy is meant to treat the core symptoms of autism. Therapists, parents, teachers and caregivers work within a child's interests and behaviors to aid in communication, engagement, interaction and other skills.
PECS Therapy is an augmentative communication system which uses pictures to help autistic persons whom have speech delays to communicate with those in their life. Sets of cards with pictures of food, toys, actions, etc., are exchanged with a child in an effort to give the child a way to make requests, show feelings, and otherwise communicate without using words. A child may hand a card showing a picture of a glass of water to request a drink. A teacher may set-up a students daily schedule in a series of picture cards to explain the students daily schedule.
Biomedical Therapy focuses on dietary intervention. Those whom advocate nutritional therapy believe dietary changes are behind their great strides in helping autistic persons to live higher quality lives, but as is always the case in alternative therapies, there are those whom disagree. Within the biomedical therapy concept is Chelation which is a manner where metal is said to be removed from the body. This is based on the idea that metal such as mercury, etc., is responsible for autism. Again, there are those whom disagree with this theory.
I Can Do It Myself
After reading through the list of therapies, you may realize that although the techniques vary, they vary ever so slightly and in fact may even seem to overlap. You may also decide these techniques are something you yourself and or sitters and other private caregivers can provide without so much as setting foot inside an institute of higher learning and or obtaining a certificate, diploma or other proof of expertise. You're right on... This is not, as they say, rocket science. You are as qualified as any proclaimed autism expert. The sole difference may be monetary compensation for yourself, though you will be rewarded in ways no dollar can touch.
You love your child. You play and interact with your child. You want the best for your child. Providing therapy for your child, even if it's supplemental, will ensure a feeling of closeness to your son/daughter and a better understanding of their walk with autism. In a way you're returning to yourself that which was taken from you when you first heard the label, autism, applied to your child. You are reigniting the fire, taking back what you set out to do when you decided to have a baby. You are guiding and raising a human being to becoming an asset to themselves, those near and dearest, as well as in the community in which he lives.
If you have the time to spend... If you want to spend the time... Educate yourself in every manner available to you. Read all you're able... Attend lectures and seminars. Learn all there is to know on therapies and keep up on new trends, fresh perspectives and evolution within the field. Talk to experts and other professionals. Contact research organizations, support groups and other autism gatherings. Befriend parents, family and friends of autistic children, teenagers and adults. Listen to and learn from educators, therapists, doctors, advocates, etc., whom may aid you on your mission. Be sure to look into both the private and public school system and compare what each has to offer... Most schools have occupational, speech, social skills, physical, behavioral and other therapies available on their campus, or on a nearby campus in their district.
Whether you choose to provide your own form of therapy, or receive therapy for your child via another source, keep current records on your child's progress and which strategies have been successful and unsuccessful. Network within the autism community and feel free to receive and review information brought to you from all areas. Enjoy your journey and remember to give back to the community. In other words, internalize all you've learned and pass it on...

PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication System. The picture symbols most commonly used are Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) and are made by Mayer Johnson's Boardmaker software. PECS uses picture representations of object, action, person, and attributes (descriptions). The picture representations can be in the form of PCS, photographs, Clip Art, magazine pictures, product labels, etc... Some children may do better using object representations instead of pictures but the exchange system remains the same.
The PECS training is a 2-3 day training for SLPs, teachers, and parents so it's difficult to give you detailed information in YA. If you would like more ideas/tips how to implement PECS properly, please e-mail me. I will be happy to help.

I have used Makaton in the past and am not a big fan of it. I find individuals with Autism learn best with visual supports in the form of pictures &/or written words. As a speech-langauge pathologist, I would not recommend using PECS alone. A multimodal approach is much more effective for functional communication. Communication boards, picture schedules, social stories, repetition, literacy-based instruction, sign language/gestures, etc... are all beneficial in increasing expressive, receptive, and pragmatic language skills.
