Phonics Kindergarten
Self- Published Author Celebrates improved literacy through Phonics!!
Four Year old Mia loves to read and dictated a poem to her father that was later published. Are children born good readers or made? In an article in the Washington Post Book Whisper: Are Good Readers Born or Made? by Donlyn Miller where there was a study of thirty-five third through fifith graders than had a one hundred hours in a remediation program. Even though these children improved dramatically the twenty five excellent readers still out performed the children in the remediation program.
As a literacy expert and reading teacher for seven years I strongly believe that good readers are made. Once children know the code or rules and looks for patterns in words they will become excellent readers. For some struggling readers becoming a better reader maybe something as simple as getting their vision or hearing checked.
I had a student that was not improving in the program after two months. I put the book she was reading on the table and she strugged with each word. I then put the book up closer to her eyes and she could read amazingly well. Yet the school had her pegged as a special Ed student. She just needed to wear glasses. Or what about the child who has ADD or ADHD? Since children with ADD and ADHD have trouble focusing and are quite active, you may think they are not listening. In reality they are, give them something to do while you are teaching the concepts like silly putty , legos, or any other manipultive you have. In That way you won't be constantly be reminding them to pay attention.
Once a child knows and understands the patterns and it is presented in a fun and exciting way, children will love to read. It is similar to when you learn to ride a bike. Once you know how to ride a bike it you are excited and want to keep doing it. However if you are trying to read but it is a struggle you simply are not motivated to read.
Every child has the ability to become an excellent reader. In the book How Jill Learned to Read Using phonics, it describes the child's indiviudal learning style and creative strategies and techniques for increasing reading comprehension, fluency,and word patterns. If you have a stuggling reader and the school your child attends does not teach phonics. Their are many resources you can use to help your child become a excellent reader.
